zen
How to meditate. I thought it would be as simple as:
- Don’t stop breathing.
- Realize that you and the universe are one.
But apparently there are a bunch of rules.

google’s developers
From a Slashdot discussion on age discrimination in software companies:
Google’s giant R&D operation is starting to look like a huge flop. Google has never originated a successful post-search product in-house. The ad system was acquired from DoubleClick. They had to acquire YouTube because Google Video was a flop. The hard part of Gmail, the smart filtering, came from Postini. The Android software was acquired from Android, Inc. PIcasa was acquired from Picasa, Inc. Google Earth was acquired from Keyhole, Inc. SketchUp was acquired from @Last Software. Google Voice was acquired from Grand Central.
In-house, they produced Google Answers, Base, Lively, Knol, Buzz, Wave, Gears, Page Creator, etc – a collection of cool hacks, all now discontinued.

the demolition of detroit
As Otis approaches the house, Lorenzo cranks open a fire hydrant. A rush of rusty water pours out. He attaches a hose and starts spraying the house to tamp down all the dust and ash that come with obliteration. The CAT thrums insistently forward, mmmmm-hmmmm-mmmmm-hmmmm, and Otis digs the grapple into the front yard, pulling it up in pieces and laying the lawn over the sidewalk to protect it from the weight of his encroaching machine. “The city’s a wreck,” says Lorenzo, “but we don’t treat it like that. We try not to crush anything we don’t have to crush.”

suckers
Agriculture was a bad deal for most of the humans who switched to it from the hunter/gatherer thing. The rich did OK, everyone else got screwed.
I’ve got to reread some of Diamond’s books, they had some good stuff.

oldie but goodie
Lunch tends to run long on a day like this, and it seems like all the guys decide to eat together at pubs and taverns instead of girly-man places like Au Bon Pain or Chicken Out.
After that, it’s time to hit the slopes for the rest of the afternoon, schussing back to the cubicle, ready to chop down the forest. The coat closet by the reception desk smells ripe and woolly. Snow Day Man sits at his desk and waits for the avalanche search-and-rescue distress call that never comes.

life and times of the paramedic
I understood there would be my life before I spent time in the truck and my life after. We raced through the night, and I tried to prepare myself. Darryl prepared, too, but in a different way. He switched his brain into its most methodical gear. It was almost as though he were treating patients in advance of seeing them. “Time is tissue,” he said.
…
“There’s clinically dead, which we can work with,” Darryl said. “And there’s obviously dead, which we can’t.”
