What Is This Weird Balloon For

overconsumption or overpopulation

leave a comment »

The New Scientist has an article up claiming that overconsumption rather than overpopulation is the root of global problems.

It’s an interesting read, but I have to doubt their math skills when they claim that, “There is no exponential growth.” Even by their numbers there are an average of 2.6 children being born to each female. Replacement rate is 2.3, so even 2.301 would be exponential growth. They argue that the number will keep going down; I would argue that it must go down one way or the other: even 2.301 is unsustainable in the long run.
