The architect Victor Gruen detested soulless suburbia in the mid-1950’s. He proposed a way to improve it: the shopping mall.
Today, there hasn’t been a new mall opened since 2006. Sales at the existing ones are mostly poor, and since the United States doesn’t build highways any more, it isn’t building any good places to put new ones.
